Sweet Will be the Flower (God Moves in a Mysterious Way)

by Cowper/Bradbury, arr. Cindy Loggins Hale

 This simple, beautiful hymn has been a strength and guide for many people experiencing difficult trials. I always felt it could use a sweeter accompaniment, as the music itself is quite plain. This SATB arrangement is an expression of the hope this hymn inspires. The third and fourth verses have been switched in this version, to add additional meaning.

1. God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform;
He plants his footsteps in the sea
And rides upon the storm.

2. YSATBe fearful Saints, fresh courage take;
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy and shall break
In blessings on your head.

3. Blind unbelief is sure to err
And scan his works in vain;
God is his own interpreter,
And he will make it plain.

4. His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding ev’ry hour;
The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flower.
